Best Time For Photos: Golden Hour Explained

What is golden hour and why does it matter for photography? If you’ve spent any time talking to photographers, you’ve probably heard about the “golden hour.” But what makes this time so special? Golden hour is the time of day when the sunlight is softer, warmer, and more flattering—perfect for capturing stunning photos.

A Common Misconception About Golden Hour

While golden hour is often thought of as the hour right before sunset, the reality is a bit more nuanced. As a film photographer, I approach this light with precision and care to ensure we have the best quality of light.

Here’s what you need to know:

Timing Isn’t Set in Stone: I prefer to start golden hour sessions at least two hours before sunset.

The Final 30 Minutes: Because the the light can change quickly in the last 30 minutes it can produce dramatic and dynamic shots.

Location Impacts Light: The timing and quality of golden hour light can vary depending on your location. For example, dense trees or tall buildings in downtown areas can create shadows that alter how we use this beautiful light.

How to Maximize Golden Hour on Your Wedding Day

Golden hour is the perfect time for capturing couples’ portraits. The lighting enhances natural beauty and creates an ethereal, romantic atmosphere. Here’s how I help my couples plan their day to make the most of this fleeting window of magic:

Spring and Summer Weddings

  • Sunset Time: Around 8:00 PM
  • Ideal Ceremony Start Time: 5:30 PM
  • Couples Portraits: 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Fall Weddings

  • Sunset Time: Around 5:00 PM
  • First Look Timing: Around 3:00 PM before the ceremony

Golden hour adds a timeless glow to your photos and proper planning ensures you’ll make the most of this fleeting light. Whether your wedding is in a lush outdoor venue or a cityscape surrounded by tall buildings, I’ll work with you to craft a timeline that captures the magic of your day.
